Body Shaming sadly exists even to this date, and only those who are overweight and that plus size figure are the ones who understand what the world thinks of them. They are constantly surrounded by the feeling of insecurity and solitude.
Haley Morris-Cafiero, who is a photographer, and an overweight woman, decided to take photographs of her in the environments where she felt uncomfortable. She came with a project called “Wait Watchers”, which is kind of a social experiment in a form of series of photos collected into one book that captures how passers-by react to overweight people they see on the street.
She was in New York and she grabbed a lot of attention, only because she was an overweight woman. She then received criticism for wearing makeup, going to the gym, putting efforts on dressing up and stuff like that. The series has stirred some controversy online, as not everyone supports the photographer’s claims. While the photographs do capture strangers glancing at the photographer, no one can claim with an absolute certainty that all of the looks are mocking or judging. According to many commenters online, the strangers not necessarily react in a negative way when looking at someone, they just might have been curious about the camera or something outside the frame. This project got her very famous and gave her worldwide recognition.
.They’ll judge if an overweight lady sits on a chair.
.Not everyone can have perfect bodies and it is completely fine.
.She’ll find her size, and that glare was seriously not required.
.Why do strangers react in a negative way when they look at someone who is overweight.
.“Can I sit here in peace?”
.Beaches are great for fun time and maybe some fat shaming.
.Fashion! Looking and feeling good in your own skin.
.“Where do you want to go?”, “I won’t, my sight would!”
.Not even cops can stay away from it?
.Random day, random pose, random fun.
.Make it ripple till it’s wavy because she’s tsunami.
.It’s wrong to look at what you like.
.No matter what you’re doing, people are going to look at you like you have done a crime.
.Why can’t people mind their own business?
.People look even when it’s normal walking on the streets.
.People will always be observant.
.You will be scanned by people before going somewhere. And these photographs prove it.
Fat shaming is among the worst things that exist today because it’s a way of humiliating someone because of their body. Rather than focusing on how much amount of fat one has in his or her body, we should be judging people by their actions, their mentality, and perception. And don’t you think that beauty lies within?
